Farewell Mick & Micky

Yesterday was a sad day for the Samios family. My uncle Mick passed away peacefully in his sleep. We had all visited him in the morning but he was already unconscious with difficulty breathing due to a bout of pneumonia worsened from a recent hospital infection.

My uncle had a pet cockatoo that talked a lot and had been a member of his family for 40 years. As my uncle and aunt had no children, they were both very attached to their pets and the cockatoo was named Micky (junior).

As youngsters, my brothers and I loved visiting Uncle Mick. The cockatoo was let out of his cage and allowed to perch on the Hills rotary clothes hoist. We used to love spinning that thing and watching the cockatoo flap his wings and get excited. Not very nice I know but in our defence, we were just kids.

Well, the weird thing is that the cockatoo died yesterday too. How eerie is that? It's going to be so strange visiting my aunt who is now alone with neither my uncle or cockatoo being there anymore.

It reminds me of a song that I learnt at school (a very long time ago) called My Grandfather's Clock: "
But it (the clock) stopped short. Never to go again, When the old man died...."

Rest in Peace Uncle Mick and Micky. I will remember you both fondly.

I'm sorry for your loss Thea. The cockatoo must have been holding on for as long as he could for your uncle, that is really quite extaordinary. I feel for your Aunt though, it must be a terribly difficult time for her having lost them both.

How sad for your whole family. It is always so hard when loved ones die, fortunately the good memories we have of them never do...

I'm so sorry for your loss Thea.:-(
I used to bring up My Grandfathers Clock on the internet when Jordan grandbabie was just starting to walk, and I'd be singing along and clapping, trying to amuse him. It's one of those songs that has stuck in my brain that I loved when I was a chld. I dont think I have ever known anyone else to enjoy it like I do!
Isn't it strange ( in a lovely way ) that the cockatoo hung on until he felt it was OK to go !

Thinking of you. That is ever so strange. The bird must have been closest to your uncle and knew he was going to go. I love these stories even though they make me cry!

That is very sad and yet it could be some comfort to your Aunt knowing that her Mick and Micky are together.

Oh Thea I am sorry to hear of this - how is your Aunt holding up? So sad to have lost both the "men" in her life all at once. we form such strong relationships with our pets don't we? I am glad you have some wonderful chidhood memories of both your Uncle and Mickey - I am sure that your Aunt will love hearing them when you visit her in the future.

Very sad news Thea, I hope you and your Aunt and your family are doing okay. Extraordinary to hear of Micky the cockatoo passing the same day ... just amazing. The world can be such a mysterious place sometimes where it's hard to define stories like that as plain coincidence ... sending hugs
Allison xx
