A Day for Joy

Many years ago, my mother gave me a bottle of Joy perfume, advertised at the time as "the costliest perfume in the world". That made it feel so precious that I never dared to open it but kept it for the "special occasion" that justified its use.

So for at least 20 years, I have kept this tiny bottle unopened. It's silly when you think about it so today was the day that I finally opened and used it. It is a nice fragrance but probably not one that I would have chosen for myself.

My uncle's funeral yesterday made me think of all the things we save and not enjoy in life. Why do we do it? Why don't we use the good china and silver? Why are we too nervous to cut into vintage or expensive fabric? How many things do we find in perfect condition that somebody else never enjoyed?

Today, Voyt and I became godparents to my beautiful nephew Matteo and it was a day for Joy.

I do hope that you are inspired to enjoy something that you have been otherwise saving. Today is special, life is precious so do open that bottle of champagne you have been saving and drink to your good health!

You are right..if we have nice things it is good to enjoy them..though of course the very best things are not made of china or glass but are relationships with family and friends..what can beat a shared smile or a baby's kiss.

I agree!

Today is the perfect day to enjoy drinking that special wine and wearing that pretty skirt and unwrapping that book..

1.yesterday I opened a bottle of wine that was special

2.few days back I wore that white skirt I have been "saving" in the wardrobe God knows why and for whom

3. this I find hard to do: UNWRAP and OPEN a book I have on THE GREEK ISLANDS.

So true Thea. My mum was like this as well - always saving things so they wouldn't get damaged etc. Now that she is no longer here I enjoy all her wonderful things I have inherited. What's the point of it sitting in a cupboard? I know she would be happy to see it all out being used and enjoyed by her family and friends. Ange

What a lovely post, and so true. There are so many examples of this happening in life, but I do remember when my two eldest girls were little I kept their 'best clothes' for 'best', and consequently they grew out of them having hardly been worn. When Elsie came along 9 years later, I made sure that she always wore the nice things, even to the shops for a bottle of milk, otherwise, what is the point. Thankyou for reminding us, to enjoy the beautiful things we surround ourselves with. Michelle x

I completely agree with you Thea! When my parents passed away I found so many things that my mother had saved and never used/opened. She could have enjoyed these things and never did. It made me so sad.
Since then I use things that most people save for special days everyday. For instance the silver cutlery set my Aunt gave me. Yes, we eat with silver spoons and forks everyday. When I make tea I use my mom's best fancy teapot. Because you only live once. And besides that, I don't throw fancy dinner parties so....:)
